Why are there so many spiders in Port Elgin? Causes, prevention and what actually helps

You cleared the webs off the front windows on Saturday and by Wednesday they are back. Spiders in Port Elgin are not a sign that something is wrong with your house. They are a sign that your house sits a few kilometres from Lake Huron, has lights on at night and offers sheltered corners, which describes nearly every home in Port Elgin. Here is what is going on, and what to do about it.

Why spiders in Port Elgin gather on the same houses

Spiders go where the food is, and the food comes off the lake. Midges, mayflies (the fishflies) and caddisflies hatch out of Lake Huron in pulses from spring to frost, the mid June to July mayfly emergence being the big one, and after dark they fly inland. In the subdivisions on both sides of Highway 21, the streets in town and the homes on the roads inland, the insects find the brightest point around: a porch light, the coach lights on the garage, a lit front window. Soon there is a web beside every one of them.

The house provides the shelter. Window and door frames, soffits, porch ceilings, the top of the garage door and the gap behind a downspout are all protected from wind and rain. Vinyl and stone exteriors, common on the newer homes here, give plenty of edges to anchor to. Shrubs against the wall and trees on the north side add more. Two neighbours can have very different spider pressure depending on their lights and how much greenery touches the siding.

Why the webs come back after you clean them

Knocking a web down fixes the way the house looks for the afternoon. It does not change the corner. The light is still there, the insects still arrive at dusk, the frame still offers shelter. If the spider was not removed with the web, it rebuilds overnight. If it was, another one takes the spot soon enough, because the spot is good.

There is a second reason most people never see. Egg sacs. A female spider leaves a small white or tan bundle tucked into the corner or under the soffit lip, and each one hatches dozens of spiderlings into the same sheltered spot. Brushing a web off and leaving the sac behind is how one spider becomes forty.

So managing spiders is a combination: remove the webs, spiders and egg sacs together, change what you can about the corner, and keep ahead of it through the season. No single cleaning or treatment settles it for good, and anyone who promises that is overselling.

When spiders are most noticeable here

Spring starts a little later in Port Elgin than at the south end of the lake. The overwintered spiders begin moving in the second half of May. June brings the lake hatch and the heaviest build on the porch, the garage door and the lights. By late August the orb weavers have grown large enough that their webs stretch across whole window panes. October cools things down and some spiders look for gaps into the house.

Six practical ways to reduce webs around the house

These all make a professional visit go further.

Do you need spraying for spiders in Port Elgin?

Not for most of the house, most of the time. Spraying a web does not take the web down and does not touch the egg sac. Product on every wall of every house every month puts far more of it around pets, gardens, pollinators and the lake than anyone needs, and still leaves every web hanging. Spider Pros does it the other way around.

Every visit starts with removal. A backpack HEPA vacuum takes the webs, spiders and egg sacs off everything within reach: porch ceilings, lights, window and door frames, the garage door frame, first floor soffits and the foundation line. High eaves and peaks are swept down with a cobweb brush on a telescoping pole. Removal works instantly and does not wash off.

Then, only where activity justifies it, a targeted treatment goes on those sites and no others. The product is registered in Canada and applied where the label allows, at the lowest label rate that works, by a trained technician, supervised by our licensed exterminator, wearing what the label requires: long sleeves, long pants, chemical resistant gloves, and eye protection for overhead work, plus a respirator for overhead work as company policy. People and pets stay off treated areas until they are dry, and we put that time in writing. After every visit you get a written summary of what was used and when the areas are clear. Port Elgin is served from Kincardine on a dedicated service day; details are on the Port Elgin page.

A single visit is from $199, and the Season Plan, three visits in May, July and September, is from $499. Larger homes run about 30 percent more. Prices are before HST for a standard home up to about 2,000 square feet, confirmed before work starts. The service is described on the spider control page. If webs come back within 60 days on the areas we treated, we re-treat them the next day we are in your area at no charge; the guarantee page has the details, including why decks, railings and fences are courtesy areas rather than covered ones.

Are the spiders around Port Elgin homes dangerous?

Almost all of them are harmless and useful. House spiders, cellar spiders, wolf spiders and orb weavers make up nearly everything on a Port Elgin house, and they eat the midges. Do not pick up a spider you cannot identify, and see a doctor if a bite swells or you feel unwell. For most families the real issue is how the webs make the house look, and that has a straightforward fix.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Why are spiders so bad around my windows in particular?

A window frame offers sheltered edges, and the light from inside pulls insects to the glass after dark. That combination is a web builder's ideal site. Taking the web and the egg sac off, and treating that frame only if it keeps refilling, is what keeps ahead of it.

Will removing the webs keep the spiders away?

It removes what is there now, including the spiders and sacs if it is done properly, and that holds far better than a web brushed off with the spider left behind. New spiders can still arrive from the hatch. That is why the Season Plan has three visits rather than one.

When should I book spider control in Port Elgin?

The second half of May, once the overwintered spiders are moving and before the June hatch. If it is already July and the porch is covered, a single visit takes everything down and September keeps ahead of the fall orb weavers.
